What is cement?

Cement is basically a binder, a material that binds together other materials, hardens them, and sets them into place. Cement can be combined with other materials to create mortar, for instance, or even with fine sand and gravel to make concrete. The cement that is used to build the majority of our homes is lime, derived from gypsum rocks. This compound is a very powerful adhesive that can also bond glass together! So much so that if glass was glued to the back of a truck with cement, it would be incredibly strong - as well as very heavy.

We use cement to create reinforcing slabs for roads, floors for buildings, and a variety of other uses. For instance, roads are reinforced using concrete because concrete is very tough and stronger than stone. Roads made from cement are not slippery. And in the construction of skyscrapers, concrete blocks are used to create strong, solid supports for the columns. Concrete works well as an exterior floor, too. When laid correctly, concrete can be extremely strong and durable. In addition, there are many aesthetic qualities to concrete, such as texture, color, and unique patterns. But there are disadvantages, too. In areas that receive high amounts of rain, the concrete may break down quickly because of the salts and chemicals in the water.

How is cement installed? In general, cement is laid on top of a layer of crushed stone called a base block. The blocks are secured in place using steel ties or metal lath. When the concrete is dry, an automatic trowel is used to complete the job. So, you now know what is cement? Great! Now, what do you need to know about how it's used? Well, if you want to build a house, you need to find a construction company that can provide you with the materials and the manpower to perform the project.
